Our CSA program, which stands for Community Supported Agriculture, began rather humbly several years ago. However, as the local agriculture movement has grown, so has our CSA; to the point where we now have about 60 members.
The concept of CSAs started in Europe and Japan in the 1960s to help farmers gear up to their growing season in partnership with their customers and came to the United States in 1984. By providing a guaranteed market through prepaid annual sales, consumers essentially help finance farming operations. This allows farmers to focus on not only quality growing, but can also level the playing field in a food market that favors large-scale, industrialized agriculture over local food.
CSA members pay for their shares ahead of time, which enables the farmer to hire staff, purchase seeds, repair tractors, equipment and tools. It still is months before the farmer can bring their produce to the markets. This "share risk" arrangement creates a true partnership between the farmer and the CSA member. In return, each week we bring down food from our farm to our various CSA drop off locations.
HOW OUR CSA WORKS
Our CSA is divided into 5 sessions
NEW this season Session 1 - starting May 8 - 4 weeks session - Takoma Park pick up only
Tuesday and Saturday picks up:
Session 2 June-July
Session 3 August-September
Session 4 October
Saturday pick up only:
Session 5 November
In order to experience a full season's spectrum of produce, we recommend you sign up for all four sessions. Some CSA members pay for the full season, while others are more comfortable paying for each session. We are flexible about vacations, and if known ahead of time, will prorate the session according to how many weeks you will be picking up. Shares that are not picked up without any notice (there is some flexibility) are donated to shelters or families in need.
Due to the growing demand for our CSA it is highly recommended you sign up early, as there is a possibility our CSA will fill up. If you are interested in a CSA share or have further questions, please e-mail us at esiegel2@igc.org.
